According to Greek mythology, the Island of Aegina received its name from a nymph who was the daughter of the river god Asopos and Metope. It was after she was abducted by god Zeus and gave birth to Aeacus, that the island got the name Aegina. This island of the gods would later catch the attention of Ioannis Kapodistrias who was governor between 1827 and 1829. The governor commissioned the construction of neoclassical mansions to serve as the new Aegina town headquarters. Today, these buildings contribute to the town’s impressive sights.
The beautiful Temple of Aphea on Aegina island is part of the holy triangle which is an equilateral triangle formed by the alignment of the Temple of Poseidon, the Parthenon and Aphea.  The popularity of Aegina Island is due to its proximity to Athens; it’s tasty pistachios, and it’s unspoiled landscape. Plus it takes only an hour at cross over in a ferry. Enjoy the beautiful sprawling beaches, seafood tavernas and fishing villages before or after the retreat.
