The first impression of the Messinia region in Greece for a visitor is one of contrast because, while it is a great destination to meditate and relax, it is nothing like the numerous tourist spots around the greater Greece. Most people imagine a tourist spot, and especially a beach destination to be adorned by sun bathers and colorful beach umbrellas like it happens in all the other beaches around Greece. In Messinia is where you will find the cow’s belly, which is a semi-circle shaped beach where the sand is golden brown in color. To crown this landscape are cliffs of towering limestone and it is no doubt a beautiful place to be found in. While it may seem too laid back for the typical tourist, it is a wonderful place where one can ride horses, enjoy an unwinding walk or practice yoga without fear of interruption.
Located just two hours away from the city of Athens, Messinia coastland comprises of many beaches of various sizes, some with calm waters and others with roaring splashes of waves. The region does come alive with hikers and surfers in the spring time. This is the perfect tour destination for those who love history but do not enjoy being in crowds; you are bound to fall in love with remains from the old Messini city, visit Nestor’s palace, one of 13th century well preserved Mycenaean palaces. To keep off the heat at midday, visitors to the area can enjoy traditional fish prepared by the quayside in a village restaurant, explore the beauty of the Neda waterfalls which is a natural cool spot or join in a yoga retreat.
Ideally, when you visit Messinia on a yoga retreat, the greatest portion of your time is spent in meditation and aligning your soul to your body
